KAUFMANN MERCANTILE

The Kaufmann Mercantile is an online store for carefully selected, high-quality products based out of Brooklyn New York.  I love their ideals. “Products that outlast you.”  They believe well made products should be passed down, and not made cheaply.   They have a wonderful variety of goods, at reasonable prices.  Pay them a visit here.

HOMES | BELOVED STENGRATAN

Another fantastic home from Beloved Homes! Mia, Staffan, and their three boys call this townhouse built in 1963 home.  The rules of the house are easy, hang up your coat and don’t eat on the couch.  From our experience that is about as many rules as our kids can handle at a time.  I love how open this house feels.  Each room feels just large enough to allow multiple activities to happen at one time, but without losing the cozy intimate feel.  The kids have rein over their own spaces, and there are a few spaces set aside for adult retreats.  The balcony looks like an amazing place to pause and gather your parental strength.  Once again I find myself being jealous of two things: a coat room (our apartment offers only a small, dark closet that is just not enough to house everything a family might need to venture outdoors in the Pacific Northwest), and a large enough hobby space to really spread out in.    The kitchen seems to be the perfect size for a family of five.  Whenever we are in ours (preparing meals, snacks, juice, or whatever else was on the menu) our girls seem to only want to hang around on the floor where they can play, watch, and possibly help with whatever is going on up at counter height.

HOMES | LEAH BAWNAGER

Finding the Swedish flea markets more interesting and rewarding than her own Danish counterparts, Leah Bawnager would make frequent trips from Copenhagen before considering a more permanent solution.   After looking at homes, booking tours, and driving around in search of the perfect place, they finally settled on a house built in 1933 in Fränninge, 45 minutes’ drive from Malmo, Sweden.  Everything was left in great shape by the meticulous former owners, including a secret welcome note.  The previous residents has written a greeting to those who would one day tear down the wallpaper the had once so carefully put up.  Since relocating to Sweden, Leah has combined work and pleasure by opening her own store selling the Swedish treasures she finds to those in Copenhagen (or at least the ones she doesn’t use in her own home), so they won’t have to drive as far as she once did to find them. I really love the book/animal holders on the wall above the bed.  That is an ideal solution for my oldest daughter, who likes to retreat to her top bunk in order to play by herself every now and then, away from tiny toy stealing siblings who are still to young to climb.

NEW SCHEDULE!

The first year is almost over and it has flown by!  Thank you all for the encouragement  through your comments and emails!  Things slowed down around here with the holiday break, but that gave me a chance to fix some basic function issues, do a little reformatting, and get set for the new year.  I am really excited for the upcoming year, and what it means for Practically Modern!  The new three day schedule should add some consistency, and help people remember the days they like to check PM for a certain type of post.  Mondays will cover homes and interiors, Wednesday we will review a product or design, and Friday will be pretty much whatever we want it to be (products, ideas, featured designers, DIY, etc).  There will be more guest entries/reviews in the upcoming year, as well as DIY posts which will be fun!   Thanks again for the support, and of course for your comments.  Keep emailing, I love to hear from you, and happy holidays!

PRODUCT REVIEW | LACK

The Lack Shelf is one of Ikea’s most popular shelving products.  Available in three standard sizes, people adapt these simple shelves to do a variety of jobs.   The Lack is also available in a few colors, however that has not limited anyone with other ideas in mind (Google painting a Lack Shelf).  Because of the popularity of these shelves, other giant store chains now carry similar products.  The biggest difference being the way in which the shelf gets mounted to the wall.  This is extremely important, depending on what you plan to do with your shelf.   Ikea’s larger Lack Shelves have one of the best strategies to deal with concealing hardware and creating a secure and strong connection (See this previous post).
