The Lack Shelf is one of Ikea’s most popular shelving products. Available in three standard sizes, people adapt these simple shelves to do a variety of jobs. The Lack is also available in a few colors, however that has not limited anyone with other ideas in mind (Google painting a Lack Shelf). Because of the popularity of these shelves, other giant store chains now carry similar products. The biggest difference being the way in which the shelf gets mounted to the wall. This is extremely important, depending on what you plan to do with your shelf. Ikea’s larger Lack Shelves have one of the best strategies to deal with concealing hardware and creating a secure and strong connection (See this previous post).

I can think of so many places and uses for the String Shelf in our home. Made in Sweden by Stringfurniture, it is a simple and extremely versatile design. I think my favorite finish would have to be the black and walnut combination, although I also love the all white option. The Stringfurniture website has a fantastic gallery of images showing how people have used their shelves, and they often select the most “fun and creative” shelf combination to win one of their Pocket Shelves.

This is a great idea for a very simple DIY stacked wall shelf system. Use PRÄNT magazine and paper boxes from Ikea, combined with some painted accent colors and large Binder Clips to hold the boxes in place. Simple and inexpensive. However in our house, with tiny hands grabbing and pulling on everything we would probably go with a little sturdier connection strategy like screws or at least some industrial clamps, and it would need to be firmly attached to the wall so as to not be pulled over.

Love the modular design of this shelf unit from Pinch. Clearly drawing modernist cues, the play of colors, finishes, solid and transparency is spot on. If I had the right layout, I would love to put this to use as a spatial divider to take advantage of the backless modules.

The Wrong Woods furniture series is a collaboration between designer Sebastian Wrong and artist Richard Woods for Established & Sons. Wrong’s role is creating the pieces of furniture, leaving the surfaces as a blank canvas for Woods and his production team, who then apply the simplified wood grain prints in vibrant colors. Introduced to the public at the 2007 Milan Furniture Fair, the complete Wrong Woods line includes a night table, a chest of drawers, a bookcase, and a credenza type storage unit. All are available through YOOX.com.

Brilliant product design is always simple, and functional. This is a great solution for hanging your bike inside your home. Most hanging options are clunky, or unattractive and do nothing else but hold the bike. This solution doubles as a shelf, and treats your equipment more like art. See and read more about the great work from Chris Brigham over at Knife and Saw.
