HOMES | CATHERINE & MARTIN SOUTHWOOD

This home belonging to Catherine and Martin Southwood, the owners of the Southwood stores in Melbourne Australia, is a sustainable inner-city building designed for “flexibility and longevity.”  I especially like the salvaged brick and oiled plywood/concrete.  I’ve been wanting to experiment with plywood and concrete in our home for some time now.  I love the idea of our kids riding their small bikes right through sections of our house.  Click below to see more of the home, and jump on over to Design Sponge to read the full article.

HOMES | SILVER LAKE

Old Brand New has done it again with this series on a home in Silver Lake (I don’t think I have ever seen photos of a home in Silver Lake that I didn’t like).  the home looks absolutely amazing, and the photos make it feel perfectly airy.  The late summer afternoon seems to just stream in though every open window.  Click below to see more pics, or head over to Old Brand New to see and read the rest!

HOMES | MIA & MIKAEL

For their first home together, Mia and Mikael were looking for something with a touch of history.

“We wanted an old house with charm and character,’ says Mia. ‘Everything becomes more interesting when it ages – even people.”

I completely agree with that sentiment, and I think the results of their effort is a comfortable home with a bit of a story to tell about both the home, and it’s inhabitants.  To see more images click below, and of course to read more head on over to Ikea Family Live.

BUENOS AIRES APARTMENT

I think my favorite part of this apartment is that table, and the open storage.  I can’t stand cupboards in the kitchen, and as soon as our children are big enough, off come the doors!

HOMES | JONATHAN SELA & MEGAN SCHOENBACHLER

Jonathan Sela and Megan Schoenbachler knew exactly what kind of home they wanted to create for their family.  Something modern yet warm, connected to the environment, open, and a little rough.  The subdued colors, salvaged barn wood, cork flooring, earthy concrete, and vintage furniture, and flea market finds combine beautifully with the more modern forms of the home.  I especially love the huge dining room table, made from an Oregon Spruce tree that had been downed in a storm (if there is one thing we always need in our family it’s more room around the table).   Indoor and outdoor spaces flow freely from one to another, allowing the children to explore on their own without ever being too far away.  Natural light seems to poor in from every angle, and you can’t look a single direction without seeing some greenery beyond.  Outside, the front yard is child’s dream.  Complete with a teepee swing set, integrated sand box (more like a sand area), a bridge, climbing ropes, and a soft pathway for riding on.  “Most people want to get out of their house. I’m happy to stay home all day.”  No doubt.

APARTMENT | BARCELONA

This feel of this place reminds me of a home in Southern California I lived in for a time when I was young.  It has the same leafy plants scattered around, the mix of finished and rough materials, drawers and cupboards that stick when it gets too humid, and a floor worn from bare and sandy feet.   The windows stayed open, and the fans on day and night.  Our dog’s favorite place was either under the table with her chin on your foot, or on the patio in the shade of the banana tree.
