FIRST IMPRESSIONS | ENTRY INSPIRATION FROM IKEA

The threshold of our home is in a state of constant chaos. Clothes, shoes, scarves, boots, shoes, hats, backpacks, and whatever else a small child might have brought in from the outside litter the entry.   In the near future we will be making the move from our apartment into a small detached rental home (finally!), and one of my goals is to give us the mud area we have always needed.  Ikea’s Livet Hemma blog featured these helpful ideas a few days ago.  One thing I appreciate from these images, is the idea of different storage hooks, racks, shelves, and bins at different heights.   With our children all at different ages, varying the heights and types of storage will help get the most out of whatever solutions we come up with.

BYE BYE BIRDY PENDANTS | KOSKELA

I love the look of these simple pendant designs from Koskela.  Made from powder coated wire frames and woven flex cables, they are available in five color options.   Not coincidentally, they are a great match to Koskela’s new Jake Chair which is available in the same color range.  To see more of Koskela’s amazing work, visit their website.

FIRM LIVING 2012 CATALOGUE

Firm Living’s 2012 catalogue is out, and it is of course amazing.  I love the soft hues and neutrals mixed with the Scandinavian wood tones.

“Welcome to our Spring/Summer 2012 collection!  Creative minds, skilled hands, great techniques and a lot of effort is put into each and every single product. We value sustainable and honest materials, high quality and good craftsmanship. The result is a universe of amazing materials twisted into straight forward and geometric designs. This season we fell in love with the grey and rose colour scheme mixed with scandinavian wood notes. This fine combination of colors and materials creates a coherent and bright look – Our interpretation of spring/summer 2012.”

HOMES | MARIA WAHLSTRÖM & DAN BACKMAN

Textile Designer Maria Wahlström, and culture journalist Dan Backman moved in to this 1920’s home amid a mix of sloppy and worn mid century decor.  More than a decade later, they admit their home will never be completely finished.  As a place to test their own ideas, their home is a mix of authentic 1920’s and creative exploration (note the living room storage cabinets).   Preferring that the majority of walls are kept clear of decoration, Maria and Dan reserved only a single wall in the main living space for artwork, where two rows of picture moldings create a mini museum.  The attic studio looks like a great place to get some work done, complete with comfy seating, a fireplace, and a custom Ikea countertop used as a single long writing and work space.  The couple is already making plans for a courtyard facing balcony, to be completed in the fall.   See more images after the jump, or read more about their process and the wonderful handmade details throughout the home here.

LITTLE STUDIO | NORDIC HAPPY DESIGN

I really like the work coming out of the Swedish based Little Studio.  Working together since 2010, Marit Lissdaniel and Angelica Utterberg, call their work playful and cheerful, fit for both adults and children.  I totally agree, and I really love their mix of patterns and prints.  Too see more of their work, take a look at the website.
