The Offi Mag Table. I love this table/bench/desk. As everyone who reads this blog knows, I love things that are practical, and are good for more than one thing. The Mag Table is good for several things. Designed by Eric Pfeiffer for Offi & Company, this unassuming piece of furniture can be used as a side table + magazine holder, bench, or laptop perch. I assume (I might be wrong) the latter was more of an afterthought. This might be the perfect bedside table…but who wants to put this somewhere no one can see it?
Recently, I was lucky enough to stumble upon one of these marvelous tables at a second hand store that didn’t know what they had. Even though their price was ridiculously low, I talked them down even more (what can I say, I love to bargain). Since having it I can say it is wonderful. It performs its job as a side table/magazine holder perfectly. The rounded corners keep my children from hurting themselves on it, and they love to sit on it. For an adult, it seems a little small for a seat, but it works none the less. The magazine holder is good for your most recent subscriptions, but don’t expect it to hold a year’s worth. If you turn the table on end it becomes a clever computer stand. The reason I think this use is an after thought, is because when used this way the Mag Table isn’t ideal. It is a little short, meaning it has to sit beside you instead of directly in front of you. I know that isn’t necessarily a problem, but it would be nice to have the option.
Our table has a wood veneer finish. While we love the look, it isn’t totally suited for family living. Wet drinks, sloppy sippy cups, toys, climbing toddlers all can wreak havoc on the finish. If you have small children I would recommend the laminate finish instead. Especially if used on hard or abrasive flooring. It would be easier to clean, and more resilient. If you have a concrete floor, or if you are using the table outside, go either plastic or laminate. The side with the magazine holder tends to get scratched on the bottom. Overall though, we love our Mag Table! Easily the best second hand find so far this year!
Pros: Lightweight, rounded corners are kid friendly, performs triple duty, several elegant finish options.
Cons: May be a little pricey at $199 – $225 USD, veneer finishes require more care, when stood on end as a laptop perch the table could be slightly taller for more comfort.
