Muuto’s Unfold Pendant is one of my favorites. Made by Swedish design house Form Us With Love, the Unfold is made of soft silicone rubber with a frosted opal diffuser that hides the bulb. The silicone finish adds a warmer feel to the classic industrial design. Available in a few bright colors, as well as grey and black, it measures about 12 inches high and 13 inches wide, and weighs in at 15 lbs.
Started in 2005 by Jonas Pettersson, John Löfgren and Petrus Palmér, Form Us With Love has a reputation for quality craftsmanship and the Unfold Pendant is no exception. It arrives squished in a box, and immediately pops into shape when lifted out. The silicone rubber is nice and thick, so you won’t have any creasing or fold lines. The chord matches the pendant shade, and is plenty long for most ceiling heights at 3 meters (nearly 10 feet). At the ceiling, the canopy is matte white. The pendant will mount to any standard electrical junction box, and uses 100W bulbs (of course you can go with power saving bulbs as well). The frosted lens fits into place securely, does not slip or fall out but is easily removed to change bulbs. Because of the rubber, it doesn’t get too hot to the touch, and the color shouldn’t fade. I called DWR to see if they had any complaints, and they told me everyone was very happy with their pendants. In fact, they said the store model, which has been in place a few years and is touched constantly, is still like new.
Pros: Very durable, relatively lightweight, not too large for residential scale interiors, bright colors make a bold statement
Cons: only 5 colors, and red isn’t one. While all 5 colors are available online, DWR only carries three: Black, Grey, and Blue
