The first year is almost over and it has flown by! Thank you all for the encouragement through your comments and emails! Things slowed down around here with the holiday break, but that gave me a chance to fix some basic function issues, do a little reformatting, and get set for the new year. I am really excited for the upcoming year, and what it means for Practically Modern! The new three day schedule should add some consistency, and help people remember the days they like to check PM for a certain type of post. Mondays will cover homes and interiors, Wednesday we will review a product or design, and Friday will be pretty much whatever we want it to be (products, ideas, featured designers, DIY, etc). There will be more guest entries/reviews in the upcoming year, as well as DIY posts which will be fun! Thanks again for the support, and of course for your comments. Keep emailing, I love to hear from you, and happy holidays!

This little summer house, renovated by Jonas Labbé and Johannes Schotanus of LASC, looks like it would be the perfect summer getaway. Or maybe we will just move there! The combination of natural finishes, and simple forms is perfect. I really like the hidden storage spaces, and the large window openings with their hidden frames go a long way to open up the main room. Color is used sparingly and thoughtfully, highlighting individual spaces, like the library corridor and stairway. Being a huge fan of concrete, I am totally in love with the kitchen counter tops, I might have to experiment with that myself someday.

I really like the work coming out of the Swedish based Little Studio. Working together since 2010, Marit Lissdaniel and Angelica Utterberg, call their work playful and cheerful, fit for both adults and children. I totally agree, and I really love their mix of patterns and prints. Too see more of their work, take a look at the website.

Great idea for a DIY bedside table.

White walls and floors might seems stark or stearyl to some, but with decor bringing in the right amount of color and texture the combination can have a light, airy feel. This Scandinavian Apartment is a great example of how white can be a perfect blank canvas to build off of. The building finishes almost disappear, beautifully highlighting everyday things like books, artwork, textiles, and in this case the bright green kitchen chairs and tea trays. I also love the dark chalkboard paint used at the entry for contrast (and for a great place to leave notes and lists), and the warmth added by leaving the floorboards a natural finish in the kitchen. Enjoy!
